AI / LLM Observability & Evaluation Tools: An Objective Comparison (2026)
Compare · AI Engineering
Who this is for
Teams building with foundation models and agents who need to know: is my app behaving, is the model regressing, what’s it costing, and did a version change break my outputs?
The distinct questions
| Question | What you need | Tools |
|---|---|---|
| Is my app behaving in prod? | Tracing, logging, error/latency on LLM calls | LangfuseFreemiumOpen-source, HeliconeFreemiumVendor, DatadogPaidVendor LLM, New RelicPaidVendor |
| Is output quality holding up? | Evals, regression testing, scoring | BraintrustPaidVendor, ArizeFreemiumVendor PhoenixFreeOpen-source, Deepchecks, Statsig |
| What’s it costing? | Token/cost tracking, per-feature spend | HeliconeFreemiumVendor, LangfuseFreemiumOpen-source, provider dashboards |
| Which model is best / regressing? | Independent benchmarks | Artificial AnalysisFreeVendor, LMArenaFreeOpen-source, Epoch, METR |
| When is a model retiring? | Deprecation dates, replacements | llmstatus.ai, llmlatency.dev, model-deprecation trackers |
Honest tool-by-tool
- Langfuse (open-source core): the popular open tracing/eval layer. Best default if you want self-hostable observability + evals in one.
- Helicone: proxy-based — one-line integration, strong on cost/latency tracking. Proxy model is the easiest on-ramp; some teams dislike routing calls through a proxy.
- Braintrust: eval-first, strong for regression testing and prompt iteration. Paid, team-oriented.
- Arize / Phoenix: ML-observability heritage, open-source Phoenix for tracing/eval. Deeper for teams already in the ML-monitoring world.
- Datadog / New Relic LLM: if you’re already on them, use their LLM modules rather than adding a point tool.
- Artificial Analysis / LMArena: the go-to independent model benchmarks — capability, speed, price. Free, well-maintained; use for selection, not production monitoring.
- Deprecation trackers (llmstatus.ai etc): free, useful for migration planning; commodity data.
How to choose (data-driven workflow)
- Selection: Artificial Analysis / LMArena to shortlist models on capability + cost.
- Integrate observability: Helicone for the fastest on-ramp, Langfuse if you want open-source + evals together, your existing APM’s LLM module if you have one.
- Guard quality: add evals (Braintrust / Phoenix) — and regression-test on your own golden set when a provider ships a new model version; your own workload is better evidence than any public benchmark.
- Track cost from day one; LLM spend creeps.
- Plan migrations with a deprecation tracker.
The one thing to own yourself
Independent public benchmarks tell you a model is generally good; only your own eval set tells you it’s good for your task. When a model version changes, replay your own workload — the single most valuable AI-eval habit, and the one no vendor’s benchmark replaces.
Bottom line
A mature category, well served across every question. Choose based on how you want to integrate (proxy or SDK), whether you want open source, and which APM you already run.
