Security Ratings & Vendor Risk Tools: An Objective Comparison (2026)

Compare · Security

Who this is for

Security and procurement teams assessing their own external posture, or a vendor’s, for third-party risk, cyber-insurance, or due diligence.

The distinct questions

Question What you need Tools
How exposed are we / a vendor, from outside? Outside-in security ratings BitSightPaidVendor, SecurityScorecardPaidVendor, UpGuardPaidVendor
Is this open-source dependency well-run? Automated hygiene checks OpenSSF ScorecardFreeOpen-source (free)
What security posture does a vendor publish? Certifications, trust docs VantaPaidVendor, SafeBasePaidVendor, DrataPaidVendor trust centres, trustlists.orgFreeVendor (free directory)
Does the vendor have a disclosure route? security.txt, advisory feed manual / uriports
How do we answer a customer’s security (incl. AI) questionnaire? Questionnaire automation VantaPaidVendor, DrataPaidVendor, ConveyorPaidVendor, AutoRFPPaidVendor, ComplyJetPaidVendor

Honest tool-by-tool

  • BitSight / SecurityScorecard / UpGuard: the three outside-in ratings leaders. Scan internet-facing assets and score them. Enterprise-priced; ratings are a proxy, sometimes attribute assets wrongly — verify before acting. SecurityScorecard has moved toward real-time threat evidence (Driftnet acquisition).
  • OpenSSF Scorecard (free): the honest baseline for open-source dependency hygiene — automated checks, live API, no cost. GitHub-only; a score isn’t a decision.
  • Trust centres (Vanta/SafeBase/Drata/Conveyor): where vendors self-publish certs (SOC 2, ISO 27001). trustlists.org aggregates them free. Self-reported, so corroborate.
  • CloudSEK BeVigil: for mobile app external exposure (leaked keys, etc.).
  • Questionnaire automation (Vanta, Drata, Conveyor, AutoRFP, ComplyJet): draft answers from your own approved content. Vanta and Drata now bundle ISO 42001 (AI management) frameworks and AI-questionnaire features; ComplyJet targets early-stage startups at a flat ~$5k/yr (2026). The most common AI question is still “where is our data stored, and do you train on it?”, so answer that one clearly first.

How to choose

  1. Open-source hygiene: OpenSSF Scorecard, free, first.
  2. Vendor due diligence: check their trust centre; escalate to a ratings tool only for material contracts.
  3. Cyber-insurance / large TPRM programs: BitSight or SecurityScorecard, accepting the cost and the false-positive tax.

Bottom line

Mature, well funded and consolidated. Free tools (OpenSSF Scorecard, trust-centre directories) cover most teams’ needs; paid ratings earn their place in formal third-party-risk programmes and cyber-insurance.
